West Africa's Atlantic Shore
Liberia sits where the Guinea Highlands step down to a long sweep of Atlantic coastline backed by some of the most intact Upper Guinean rainforest remaining in the world. Most visitors find themselves surprised by how much wilderness survives here, and how few other travellers are doing the same walk through it.

A History Written in Place Names
Founded by freed African American and Caribbean slaves in the nineteenth century, Liberia carries a founding story that shows up in its architecture, its surnames and its capital city named after a US president. Monrovia blends faded colonial revival buildings with vivid market streets, and the crumbling Ducor Hotel, perched on a hill above the waterfront, stands as a haunting relic of mid-century ambition.
Rainforest and Wildlife
Sapo National Park in the southeast protects a remarkable slice of forest sheltering pygmy hippopotamuses, chimpanzees and forest elephants. It is one of the few places in West Africa where a guided walk can still bring you close to large mammals, and the river camps offer a level of remoteness that feels genuinely rare in a continent increasingly wired for tourism.
Surf, Sand and Seafood
The Atlantic beaches running south from Monrovia have drawn a loyal surfing community for decades. Robertsport in particular has developed a quiet reputation among West African surf destinations, and the village behind the beach offers guesthouses and freshly grilled fish that make a weekend visit easy to stretch into a week.
