About Aceh.
The Tip of Sumatra, the Edge of the World
Aceh occupies the northernmost tip of Sumatra and feels like a place that exists on its own terms. The Barisan mountain range runs its spine through the interior, blanketed in ancient rainforest that shelters Sumatran tigers, elephants and orangutans. The coastline curls from wild Indian Ocean surf beaches on the west to calmer, reef-fringed waters on the east, and the sense of being at the very edge of something grand never quite leaves you.

A City Rebuilt and Reborn
Banda Aceh is a city that carries its history with quiet dignity. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami reshaped it profoundly, and the remarkable recovery since then has made it a place of genuine resilience and warmth. The grand Baiturrahman Grand Mosque anchors the city centre with its striking white domes and reflecting pools. The Tsunami Museum stands as a powerful and moving tribute, and the old Dutch colonial quarter adds another layer to a city with no shortage of stories.
Surf, Forest and Hidden Shores
Aceh rewards travellers who are willing to go looking. The surf breaks around Calang and Lhoknga draw a devoted following of wave hunters, while Pulau Weh off the northern tip offers some of the finest diving in Southeast Asia with dramatic drop-offs and abundant marine life. Gunung Leuser National Park, shared with neighbouring North Sumatra, is one of the last places on earth where you can see four critically endangered species sharing the same forest.
Flavours from the Spice Coast
Acehnese food is bold, aromatic and shaped by centuries of trade with India, Arabia and beyond. Mie Aceh is a thick, spiced noodle dish that arrives piled with prawns or crab and a fiery, turmeric-rich broth. Kopi Aceh is the local coffee tradition, strong and served sweet, usually with a plate of something fried and worth lingering over. The morning markets overflow with spices, fresh fish and the kind of produce that makes cooking here feel like a privilege.
