About Iceland.
Iceland is a North Atlantic country shaped by active volcanoes, glaciers, geothermal heat and a long, exposed coastline. Reykjavík is the capital and the main urban centre, while most of the population lives in the southwest and smaller communities extend around the coast. The island appeals through the close relationship between geology and everyday life: geothermal water heats homes and pools, volcanic landscapes sit beside farmland, and changing light makes the same road feel different from one season to the next.

Reykjavík provides museums, galleries, design, music and a concentrated food scene, while the wider country offers a broad range of landscapes and experiences. Þingvellir, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss form the classic Golden Circle, and the south adds black-sand beaches, waterfalls, glacial valleys and Vatnajökull National Park. In the north, Lake Mývatn, Goðafoss, Ásbyrgi and Húsavík connect geothermal scenery, birdlife and whale watching. Hot pools, hiking, horse riding, glacier trips and coastal villages give the journey a distinctly local scale beyond the best-known viewpoints.
Iceland’s modern culture grew from settlement by people of Nordic and Celtic origins, the establishment of Alþingi at Þingvellir in 930, and centuries of political connection with Norway and Denmark. The Icelandic sagas remain central to the country’s literary identity, while contemporary culture continues through language, music, visual art and public swimming-pool traditions. Iceland became sovereign in 1918 and a republic in 1944. Its history is therefore not only a story of dramatic landscapes, but also of law, literature, fishing communities and the gradual development of an independent state.
Keflavík International Airport is the principal international gateway, with Reykjavík forming the main base for accommodation, services and onward travel. Route 1, the Ring Road, connects most towns and villages, although the Westfjords, highland routes and some regional roads require more time and careful planning. Public transport operates year-round, while self-drive trips and guided tours are common ways to reach rural areas. Conditions and daylight vary substantially by season, and accommodation is more limited in smaller communities and during the summer peak, so itineraries benefit from flexibility and realistic regional pacing.
