Mountains and Coastline

Beyond the capital, the landscape shifts dramatically. The pine forested peaks of the Massif de la Hotte rise above cloud level, sheltering some of the Caribbean's rarest wildlife. Along the northern coast, the Citadelle Laferrière stands as the largest fortress in the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on a mountaintop. The beaches of Île à Vache and the coves near Jacmel offer stretches of sand that feel wonderfully undiscovered.

Art, Music and Vodou

Haitian art is among the most vibrant in the Americas. Brightly painted canvases, intricate sequined vodou flags and recycled metal sculptures fill galleries in Pétion Ville and line the streets of Jacmel, a colonial town famous for its Carnival and papier mâché traditions. The rhythms of kompa, rara and mizik rasin provide a constant soundtrack, blending West African percussion with Caribbean melody. Vodou, far from the caricatures, is a living spiritual tradition woven into daily life and celebrated openly.

Flavours of Kreyòl

Haitian cuisine reflects the island's layered heritage. Griot, fried pork marinated in citrus and spice, is the unofficial national dish, best eaten with pikliz, a fiery pickled cabbage relish. Street vendors serve akra (malanga fritters) and pate (savoury pastries), while a full meal might feature diri ak djon djon, rice cooked with earthy black mushrooms unique to Haiti. Rum punch made with Barbancourt, one of the Caribbean's finest rums, rounds out any meal in style.
