Where the Amazon Begins
Guyana is South America's great secret: a country where more than 80 percent of the land remains covered in pristine rainforest, where jaguars and giant river otters roam undisturbed and vast savannahs stretch to the horizon beneath open skies. It shares the Guiana Shield with Suriname and French Guiana, an ancient geological formation that predates the Andes and harbours biodiversity found almost nowhere else on earth. The result is a destination that rewards the genuinely curious: fewer crowds, wilder landscapes and the feeling of having stumbled somewhere few travellers have thought to go.

Kaieteur and the Interior
Kaieteur Falls drops nearly five times the height of Niagara in a single unbroken plunge into a forested gorge, and it does so almost entirely in solitude. There are rarely more than a handful of visitors on any given day, which makes the experience genuinely staggering. Beyond Kaieteur, the Rupununi savannahs open into an expansive grassland dotted with Amerindian villages, caiman-filled rivers and the distant tepui mountains that inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. Light aircraft connect the interior to Georgetown, making these landscapes more accessible than their remoteness suggests.
Georgetown: Colonial Timber and Caribbean Energy
Georgetown is one of the few surviving cities built almost entirely in colonial-era timber, with cathedral-sized wooden churches, shuttered verandah houses and a network of canals running through the flat coastal grid. St George's Cathedral is reputedly the tallest wooden church in the world. The Stabroek Market is the chaotic, aromatic heart of the city: an iron-roofed Victorian structure spilling out across the waterfront where the Demerara River meets the sea. Georgetown's food culture reflects the country's extraordinary ethnic mix, drawing on Amerindian, African, Indian, Chinese and Portuguese traditions in the same kitchen.
Nine Nations, One Country
Guyana's nine Amerindian nations have called this territory home for millennia, speaking distinct languages from three ancient families: Cariban, Arawakan and Waraoan. Their communities stretch from the coastal mangroves to the southern rainforest, maintaining traditions of cassava cultivation, river fishing and intricate craft-making that persist alongside a growing eco-tourism economy. The country's broader cultural tapestry weaves together the descendants of enslaved Africans, indentured South Asian labourers and Chinese migrants, producing a cuisine, a music and a social fabric unlike anywhere else on the continent.
