The Bijagós: An Archipelago Apart

The Bijagós Islands are the crown jewel of Guinea-Bissau, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of roughly 88 islands where saltwater hippos wade through mangrove channels and sea turtles nest on pristine beaches. Most islands remain uninhabited, and the ones that are home to the Bijagó people preserve traditions and ceremonies stretching back centuries. Getting there is half the adventure, usually by pirogue from the port island of Bubaque.

Rhythms of the Mainland

On the mainland, the capital Bissau hums with a creative energy that belies its small size. The Carnival celebrations here rival those of any in West Africa, with elaborate papier mâché masks, vibrant rhythms, and street parades that take over the city for days. Beyond Bissau, the lush interior holds cashew orchards and sleepy towns where a cold beer and a plate of grilled fish are never far away.

A Place That Finds You

Guinea-Bissau is not a destination that shouts for attention. There are no glossy resort strips or crowded tour buses here. What you will find is genuine warmth from the locals, extraordinary birdwatching along the coastal wetlands, and a sense of discovery that comes from visiting a place still largely off the tourist map. It rewards the curious and the patient in equal measure.
