Ancient Kingdoms and Living History

Kumasi sits at the heart of the Ashanti Region and carries its history with immense pride. The Manhyia Palace museum tells the story of one of West Africa's great empires, and the Kejetia Market, vast and labyrinthine, sells kente cloth, brass weights, carved stools, and almost anything else imaginable. Further north, the mud mosque at Larabanga stands as one of the oldest mosques on the continent, its distinctive Sudano-Sahelian spires rising from the dusty Savannah like something from another world.

Coastline, Castles, and the Sea

Cape Coast and Elmina hold two of the most significant historic sites in Africa. The whitewashed walls of their slave castles stand directly above the Atlantic, UNESCO World Heritage sites that bear witness to the transatlantic slave trade with unflinching honesty. Between the history, the Gulf of Guinea coast rewards with palm-fringed beaches at Busua, cold beer at beachside shacks, and excellent surfing for those who know to look. Volta Region's lagoons and Nzulezu, the lakeside stilt village, offer something quieter and equally extraordinary.

Wildlife, Waterfalls, and Wide Open Savannah

Mole National Park is Ghana's largest and most rewarding wildlife destination, where elephants wander past the lodge at dusk and antelope pick their way across the floodplain. Walking safaris with rangers put you on foot beside herds at a distance that feels thrillingly close. In the Volta Region, Wli Waterfalls cascade through dense forest into pools that reward the hike in, while the Kakum National Park canopy walkway strings seven bridges across the forest canopy at thirty metres above the ground, offering a view of the rainforest that is genuinely unlike anything else.
