A Wildlife Watcher's Quiet Triumph

Thirteen national parks cover about 11% of the country, a network established in 2002 that turned Gabon into one of Africa's most significant conservation stories. Lopé National Park blends savanna and forest in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape where gorillas, forest elephants and mandrills roam. Ivindo National Park shelters spectacular waterfalls and pristine forest, while Loango on the coast has earned a reputation as a place where you can spot buffalo, hippos and even gorillas on the beach. The wildlife viewing here is not the open savanna spectacle of East Africa. It is patient, intimate and remarkably rewarding.

Culture Rooted in Rhythm and Ritual

Gabon's cultural life draws from more than 40 ethnic groups, each with distinct traditions, languages and artistic forms. The Fang, the largest group, are renowned for their sculptural work, particularly the carved wooden reliquary heads that once guarded ancestral relics. The Bwiti spiritual tradition, practised among the Fang and other peoples, uses the iboga plant in ceremonies that have attracted global curiosity. Music pulses through daily life, from the polyrhythmic drum traditions of the interior to the Afrobeat, hip hop and coupé décalé that fill Libreville's nightspots. Mask making remains a living art, with styles varying sharply from one province to the next.

Getting There and Getting Around

Léon Mba International Airport in Libreville handles flights from Paris, several African capitals and a growing number of regional connections. Port Gentil, the oil industry hub, sits on a delta island and was until recently reachable only by air or boat, though a road and bridge link now connects it southward along the coast. Inland, the Trans Gabon Railway runs from Libreville to Franceville, passing through thick forest and offering a genuinely memorable journey. Roads outside the main corridors can be unpredictable, especially during the rainy season, so flexibility is part of the adventure.
