About French Southern and Antarctic Lands.
A World Beyond the World
Scattered across the southern Indian Ocean and the edge of the Antarctic continent, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands are among the most remote and untouched places on earth. Five island groups and a slice of Antarctica make up this vast French overseas territory: the Kerguelen Islands, Crozet Islands, Amsterdam Island, Saint-Paul Island, and Adélie Land. No roads connect them, no scheduled flights serve them, and no permanent civilian population calls them home.

Wilderness on a Geological Scale
Kerguelen alone is larger than Corsica, a wind-lashed archipelago of fjords, glaciers, and basalt cliffs rising from steel-grey seas. Elephant seals haul themselves onto black sand beaches. Albatrosses wheel overhead in winds that have circled the planet uninterrupted. The Crozet Islands host one of the largest concentrations of king penguins anywhere on earth. This is wilderness measured in geological time, shaped by eruption, ice, and deep ocean currents.
Access Is the Adventure
There are no hotels, no tourist facilities, and no independent access. The only way to visit the Indian Ocean islands is aboard a licensed expedition vessel or, for scientists, via the supply ship Marion Dufresne II operated by the French Polar Institute. Expedition cruises occasionally pass through or land at Amsterdam and Kerguelen. Adélie Land is accessible only to scientists and support staff at Dumont d'Urville Station. Anyone visiting arrives as a guest of one of the most austere landscapes on the planet.
Science at the Edge of the Map
French research stations operate year-round across the territory, monitoring climate, oceanography, and the extraordinary sub-Antarctic ecosystems. The islands sit within one of the most productive ocean zones on earth, a staging ground for southern bluefin tuna, toothfish, and populations of seabirds that migrate tens of thousands of kilometres each year. For the rare visitor who makes it here, the reward is a view of the planet stripped of almost everything human.
