About French Guiana.
Where the Amazon Meets the Atlantic
French Guiana is one of South America's most extraordinary corners: a vast territory where equatorial rainforest covers more than 90 per cent of the land, rivers snake through jungle untouched for centuries, and the Atlantic coast gives way to mangrove-fringed shores and wild beaches where sea turtles nest by the thousand. As an overseas department of France, it sits in a curious space between continents and worlds, simultaneously South American in its ecology and geography, and fully European in its currency, institutions and passport.

A Living Mosaic of Peoples and Cultures
Few places on Earth bring together such a layered human story. The Kali'na, Lokono, Palikur, Teko, Wayampi and Wayana peoples have called this territory home for millennia, maintaining distinct languages, ceremonies and ways of life deep in the interior. Alongside them, Maroon communities descended from escaped enslaved Africans built autonomous cultures along the great rivers. Cayenne's streets blend Creole, Haitian, Brazilian, Hmong and metropolitan French influences, making the capital one of the most genuinely diverse cities in any French department.
Rockets, Rivers and Rainforest
Kourou is home to the Guiana Space Centre, the European Space Agency's primary launch facility and one of the most important spaceports in the world, set against a backdrop of tropical greenery that feels genuinely surreal. Beyond Kourou, the territory opens up into a network of rivers that serve as the only routes into the interior, where guided pirogue trips reveal the biodiversity of one of the most biodiverse forests on the planet. The Guiana Amazonian Park, covering more than 3.3 million hectares, is among the largest national parks in the European Union.
Leatherback Turtles and Wild Coastline
The beaches around Awala-Yalimapo on the Maroni coast are among the most important leatherback sea turtle nesting sites in the world, drawing visitors each year between March and July to witness one of nature's great spectacles under careful conservation management. Further along the coast, Cayenne balances a relaxed Creole city life with proximity to mangrove trails, rum distilleries, colourful markets and the atmospheric ruins of the Îles du Salut, the former penal colony islands that once held the most famous prisoner in French history.
