About South Ethiopia Regional State.
A Mosaic of Peoples
Formed in 2023 from the southern reaches of the old south, this young region is one of the most culturally diverse places on the planet. Dozens of distinct peoples, each with their own language and customs, share a landscape of lakes, mountains and river valleys. From the highlands of Wolaita to the plains of the Omo, variety is the defining feature of the region.

The Omo Valley
The lower Omo Valley is world renowned for its living cultures, where communities maintain traditions of body painting, beadwork and ceremony. Weekly markets bring people together in a swirl of colour, trade and music unlike anywhere else. It is a place to travel slowly, respectfully and with an open heart, guided by those who call it home.
Lakes and Terraces
Around Arba Minch, the twin Rift Valley lakes of Abaya and Chamo shelter crocodiles, hippos and clouds of waterbirds beneath the forested Nechisar hills. To the south, the dramatic stone terraces and walled villages of Konso have earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Green, dramatic and endlessly photogenic, this is scenery that lingers in the memory.
Highland Traditions
In the cooler highlands, the Wolaita, Gamo and Gedeo peoples tend enset gardens and some of the finest coffee in Ethiopia. Bustling towns such as Wolaita Sodo, Arba Minch and Dilla make friendly bases for exploring. Warm hospitality, rich harvests and deep traditions give the highlands a gentle, welcoming rhythm all of their own.
