About Oromia Region.
The Heart of Ethiopia
Oromia is the largest of Ethiopia's regions, sweeping in a great arc from the western forests to the southern deserts and wrapping right around the capital. It is the homeland of the Oromo, one of Africa's largest nations, whose Gada system of governance is celebrated the world over. Wherever you roam here, you are never far from a warm welcome and a strong cup of coffee.

Birthplace of Coffee
The forests around Jimma and the Kaffa highlands are widely held to be the original home of the coffee plant, where wild arabica still grows beneath the canopy. A visit to a village coffee ceremony, all roasting beans and curling incense, is a highlight of any journey. Green hills stitched with plantations roll towards the horizon in every direction.
Lakes and Highlands
The Rift Valley lakes string across the region like beads, drawing flamingos, hippos and birdwatchers to their shining shores. Higher up, the Bale Mountains shelter the elusive Ethiopian wolf and the sweeping Sanetti Plateau, a paradise for hikers and wildlife lovers. From hot lowland savanna to crisp alpine moorland, Oromia packs in a remarkable range of landscapes.
Living Traditions
Oromo culture is vibrant and proud, from the thanksgiving festival of Irreecha, when crowds gather at the water's edge in their finest dress, to age old customs of song, dance and hospitality. Bustling market towns such as Adama and Bishoftu buzz with trade and easy going charm. Take your time, share a meal, and let the rhythm of the region carry you along.
