A Meeting of Cultures

Few places in Ethiopia feel quite so wonderfully mixed. Oromo, Somali, Amhara, Harari and Arab traditions all rub shoulders here, woven together over more than a century of trade and migration. The result is a relaxed, tolerant city where mosques and churches sit side by side and several languages fill the air.

Markets and Mangoes

The sprawling Kefira market is the beating heart of Dire Dawa, piled high with spices, textiles, fruit and frankincense. In the warm afternoons, locals gather to sip strong coffee and chew khat while conversation flows. Guava, custard apple and other tropical fruits spill from the stalls, a reminder of the fertile country beyond the cliffs.

Ancient Walls and Painted Caves

The surrounding hills hide some of the oldest art in the region, with prehistoric rock paintings tucked into caves such as Porc Epic. Dire Dawa also makes a natural base for the walled city of Harar, one of Islam's holiest towns, a short drive to the southeast. For the curious traveller, this corner of the east rewards every detour.
