About Afar Region.
The Cradle of Humankind
The Afar Region cradles some of the most important fossil finds on the planet, including Lucy, the celebrated early human ancestor unearthed at Hadar. Travelling here feels a little like stepping through deep time, across a landscape that geologists treasure and historians revere. It is a place where the story of our species is written into the rock itself.

A Landscape of Fire and Salt
Home to the Danakil Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth, Afar offers scenery that borders on the otherworldly. The lava lake of Erta Ale glows through the night, while the mineral pools of Dallol shimmer in improbable shades of yellow and green. Caravans of camels still carry slabs of salt across the plains, much as they have for generations.
People of the Desert
The region is the proud homeland of the Afar people, renowned pastoralists who have thrived in this arid terrain for roughly two thousand years. Their language, clan traditions and hospitality shape daily life across the plains. Visitors who take the time to learn a greeting and share a moment of shade are often welcomed with genuine warmth.
Wild Horizons
Beyond the volcanoes, Afar shelters national parks such as Awash and Yangudi Rassa, where the African wild ass and Grevy's zebra roam. The Awash River threads through the lowlands before spilling into a chain of shimmering lakes near the Djibouti border. For travellers drawn to raw and dramatic country, few corners of Ethiopia feel quite so untamed.
