About Estonia.
Estonia is a Baltic country on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, where medieval Tallinn, quiet islands and a deeply digital public life sit alongside broad forests and wetlands. Its compact scale makes it easy to combine a historic capital with coastal villages, national parks and lake country. The country is defined by the meeting of northern European landscapes, Finno-Ugric language and a modern civic culture that values practical access and independent thinking.

Tallinn's old town provides the clearest first encounter, with limestone walls, merchant houses, towers and Toompea overlooking the harbour. Lahemaa National Park combines manor houses, coastal trails and forest, while Soomaa is known for its seasonal floods and canoe journeys. Saaremaa and Hiiumaa bring a slower island rhythm of juniper fields, windmills and lighthouses. Across the country, museums, saunas, contemporary food and a strong tradition of song and dance make the journey as cultural as it is scenic.
Estonia's present was shaped by centuries of Baltic German, Swedish, Danish and Russian rule, followed by independence in 1918, Soviet occupation and the restoration of independence in 1991. Estonian language and culture remained central through those changes, and the national Song and Dance Celebration continues to express that shared identity. Regional traditions matter too: island culture, Seto communities in the southeast and the country's relationship with forests, bogs and the sea all add different layers to the national story.
Tallinn Airport is the principal international gateway, with Tartu and smaller regional airports serving domestic and seasonal connections. Rail, coach and ferry links make it practical to travel between the capital, university towns, the coast and the islands, while a well-developed digital society makes planning and everyday services unusually straightforward. Tallinn and Tartu offer the broadest accommodation and dining choices, whereas rural parks, islands and spa towns suit slower itineraries. Summer brings the longest days and busiest visitor period, but spring, autumn and winter each open a different view of the landscape and culture.
