About Nunavut.
Our Land, Carved from Ice and Sky
Nunavut, meaning 'Our Land' in Inuktitut, is Canada's largest and northernmost territory, covering nearly two million square kilometres of Arctic archipelago, tundra, and frozen sea. Created in 1999 as the world's largest Indigenous-governed territory, it is home to a predominantly Inuit population whose culture, language, and traditional knowledge have shaped this vast landscape for thousands of years. Visitors arrive not to rush, but to witness — vast skies, silent fjords, and a way of life unlike anywhere else on the planet.

Arctic Wildlife and Landscapes
Nunavut's wilderness is staggering in scale and drama. Polar bears roam the sea ice near Arviat and Repulse Bay, narwhals and beluga whales surface in Hudson Bay, and vast herds of caribou migrate across the barren grounds each year. In summer, the midnight sun bathes Baffin Island's dramatic fjords in golden light, while the spectacular cliffs of Auyuittuq National Park draw hikers and mountaineers to some of the most remote terrain in North America. Floe Edge tours near Pond Inlet offer encounters with ringed seals, bowhead whales, and Arctic foxes along the shifting boundary of sea ice and open ocean.
Inuit Culture and Living Heritage
Nunavut is a living cultural landscape. Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit — the accumulated traditional knowledge of the Inuit people — underpins governance, education, and daily life across the territory's 25 communities. Visitors can attend throat singing performances, learn about printmaking and carving traditions rooted in Cape Dorset, or join a guided trip with Inuit hunters and elders to understand the land on its own terms. The Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum in Iqaluit holds outstanding collections of Inuit art and historical artefacts, offering a window into one of the world's most resilient and expressive cultures.
Planning Your Journey North
Travel in Nunavut requires careful planning. All communities are fly-in only — there are no roads connecting Nunavut to the rest of Canada — and costs are significantly higher than in southern provinces. Iqaluit, the capital, is the main gateway and serves as a hub for onward flights to communities across the territory. The best time to visit depends on what you seek: late winter and spring offer dog sledding and ice fishing under clear skies; summer brings the midnight sun and wildflower tundra; and late August through September delivers the aurora borealis in increasingly long nights. Whatever the season, Nunavut rewards those willing to make the journey with an experience that is genuinely unlike anywhere else.
