About Newfoundland and Labrador.
Where the New World Begins
Newfoundland and Labrador occupies the easternmost tip of North America, a rugged province split between the island of Newfoundland and the vast continental interior of Labrador. Viking explorers made landfall here over a thousand years ago at L'Anse aux Meadows, and the traces of every wave of settlement since -- Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Innu, Inuit, Irish, and English -- are woven into the landscape and the people who call it home.

A Coast Like No Other
The coastline here is genuinely wild: sea stacks, fjords, and iceberg-laced bays stretching further than you can walk in a lifetime. Gros Morne National Park alone contains ancient ocean floor thrust above sea level, making it one of the most geologically extraordinary places on Earth. From the whales that breach off the Avalon Peninsula to the puffin colonies of Witless Bay, the wildlife encounters feel personal rather than packaged.
St. John's: The Oldest City in North America
The provincial capital clings to the slopes around a sheltered harbour that has welcomed ships for centuries. George Street is one of the most pub-dense streets on the continent, and the coloured row houses of Jellybean Row have made St. John's a favourite backdrop for photographers. The city carries centuries of maritime history lightly -- its restaurants serve cod tongues and seal flipper pie alongside globally inspired menus -- and its arts scene punches far above its size.
Labrador: The Last Frontier
Across the Strait of Belle Isle lies Labrador, a continental wilderness of boreal forest, caribou migration routes, and the Torngat Mountains rising sharply from the Labrador Sea. The Trans-Labrador Highway connects a string of communities across the interior, each with its own Indigenous heritage and frontier character. Travellers who make the journey find one of the least-visited corners of the continent, where the aurora borealis blazes across genuinely dark skies and the silence is total.
