Where Vodun Was Born
Benin is the undisputed spiritual home of Vodun, the ancient religion that rippled outward across the Atlantic to shape traditions in Brazil, the Caribbean and beyond. Each January, the coastal town of Ouidah erupts into two days of ceremony, drumming and vibrant procession for Vodun Days, a national celebration that draws practitioners and curious visitors from across the world. The Temple of Pythons, the Door of No Return and the haunting Route des Esclaves bring history into sharp focus, making Ouidah one of the most culturally charged stops in all of West Africa.

Royal Palaces and Ancient Kingdoms
The UNESCO-listed Royal Palaces of Abomey stand as a monument to the fierce and sophisticated Kingdom of Dahomey, which ruled this land from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Elaborate clay bas-reliefs across the palace walls depict military victories and royal ceremony with vivid detail, preserved across centuries. Twelve successive kings built their courts here, each adding to an extraordinary complex that remains unlike anything else on the continent. Wandering through Abomey feels less like sightseeing and more like stepping directly into a living archive.
Ganvie and the Life on the Water
Out on Lake Nokoue, the remarkable stilt village of Ganvie has floated since the seventeenth century, when the Tofinu people built their homes over water to evade slavers who were forbidden from raiding across the lake. Today a community of several thousand lives, trades and goes to school entirely on the water, navigating between houses by pirogue. A boat trip through Ganvie at dawn, past floating markets and fishermen tending their akadja fish traps, is one of the quiet highlights of any trip to Benin.
Wild North and the Parks of Pendjari
In the far northwest, Pendjari National Park protects one of West Africa's most intact savanna ecosystems, sheltering lions, elephants, hippos, buffaloes and hundreds of bird species across a dramatic landscape of cliffs, rivers and open grassland. The Atakora Mountains nearby are home to the Betammaribe people, whose fortified tata somba dwellings have been built into the hillsides for generations, each structure a small fortress of remarkable ingenuity. Travelling north through Natitingou and into Pendjari rewards those who make the journey with wildlife encounters and a profound sense of remoteness.
