Rhythm, Flavour and Junkanoo

Junkanoo, the riotous street parade held on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, fills Nassau with cowbell percussion, elaborate costumes and a joyful energy that spills across every neighbourhood. Bahamian cuisine leans heavily on the sea, with cracked conch, rock lobster and johnnycake forming the backbone of countless family tables. Goombay music, rake and scrape bands and a growing contemporary arts scene round out a cultural identity that is as vivid and layered as the water surrounding these islands.
