Where Fire Meets the Caspian
Azerbaijan earns its ancient title as the Land of Fire, and not just because of the petrochemical riches beneath the Absheron Peninsula. Natural gas seeping through the earth has fuelled flames on these shores since antiquity, and the Zoroastrian fire temple of Ateshgah still draws visitors to its eternal blaze on the outskirts of Baku. Yanar Dag, a hillside that has burned continuously for decades, needs no torch and no explanation. It simply burns, relentlessly and brilliantly, as a reminder that this is a country shaped by forces older than any empire that has swept across it.

Baku: A Silk Road City Reinvented
The capital sits on the Caspian like a crescent moon, its old and new selves pressed together in fascinating contrast. The walled Inner City, Icheri Sheher, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow lanes, caravanserais, and the medieval Maiden Tower, whose true purpose archaeologists still debate. Step beyond the ramparts and you find the flame-shaped towers of the Heydar Aliyev Centre curving against the sky, designed by Zaha Hadid without a straight line in sight. Baku Boulevard stretches along the waterfront for miles, a place where families promenade at dusk, ice cream in hand, with the Caspian shimmering to the east.
Mountains, Mud Volcanoes and the Road Less Travelled
Beyond the capital, Azerbaijan unfolds across a remarkable range of terrain for a country of its size. The Greater Caucasus mountains in the north shelter the medieval village of Lahij, famous for its copper craftsmen, and the forest town of Shaki, where the Khan's Palace is covered in intricate stained glass and no two panes are alike. Down on the Absheron Peninsula, dozens of mud volcanoes gurgle and occasionally erupt with cold grey sludge, creating a lunar landscape utterly unlike anything else in the Caucasus. Gobustan National Park holds thousands of rock carvings left by Bronze Age inhabitants alongside those same restless volcanoes.
Flavours of the Crossroads
Azerbaijani cuisine is a glorious product of sitting at the crossroads of Persia, the Caucasus, and the Silk Road. Plov, the saffron-scented rice dish layered with dried fruits and chestnuts, arrives at the table wrapped in a golden crust of bread called gazmagg, and each region has its own variant. Dolma stuffed with herbs and lamb is assembled with meticulous care, and the fragrant tea culture means that a glass of amber brew with jam and rock sugar accompanies almost every conversation. In Baku, the restaurant scene has grown sophisticated quickly, with wine bars, rooftop terraces, and chefs reinterpreting traditional recipes with real ambition.
