Ancient Stones in a Modern Capital
Yerevan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, yet it hums with a thoroughly contemporary energy. Pink-tinted tuff stone buildings line wide Soviet-era boulevards, while the Cascade staircase draws crowds at sundown for its views of Mount Ararat shimmering across the border. Markets overflow with dried fruit, churchkhela and brandy, and the restaurant scene rivals any European capital for sheer enthusiasm.

Monasteries Carved from Cliffsides
Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, and the evidence is carved into almost every hillside. Geghard Monastery is partly hewn from solid rock and still echoes with chant on feast days. Noravank clings to a sheer red canyon wall. Tatev, reached by the world's longest non-stop double track cable car, perches at the edge of the Vorotan Gorge. Each site feels less like a museum piece and more like somewhere sacred history quietly continues.
Volcanic Highlands and Wild Gorges
The landscape shifts dramatically within an hour's drive of Yerevan. Lake Sevan sits at over two thousand metres, its deep blue waters framed by mountains and a peninsula topped with medieval churches. The Debed Canyon in the north takes travellers through dense forest past a string of UNESCO-listed monasteries. In the south, the Syunik region leads into remote gorges where villagers still make wine in clay jars buried underground, a tradition five thousand years old.
A Table Worth Lingering At
Armenian food is built for long meals and honest appetites. Flatbread emerges from clay tonir ovens still blistered from the heat. Dolma comes wrapped in grape leaves or stuffed into peppers. Khorovats, the national barbecue, is taken very seriously indeed. Wash it all down with locally produced wines from the Areni grape, or with Ararat brandy, which has been distilled in Yerevan since the nineteenth century and ages in oak in one of the city's most visited cellars.
